USTR Greer says section 301 investigations will seek public comments on any proposed measures

On tariffs, said US President Trump not interested in exclusion programmes. Says China expects a certain level of US tariffs that we agreed to. Says US got what it wanted from Trump-Xi summit, including stability and continued tariffs. US is mostly giving up on changing China's economic model in favour of managed trade. Trump administration view on Chinese investment in the US has not changed. Will review Chinese investment in the US in case-by-case basis. USTR will issue a Federal Register notice seeking public comment on USD 30bln of goods from China that could face modified tariffs. Trump is concerned about the US trade deficit with Mexico. Will discuss changing rules of origin to enhance US content in USMCA negotiations. US is going to have tariffs on Mexican goods as long as there is a giant trade deficit. There will be preferential treatment for countries in this region. USTR is negotiating with Mexico on a bilateral basis and also speaks to Canada. US has trade challenges with Canada, and only Canada and China have retaliated against US tariffs.
