TRADE US Treasury Secretary Bessent announced that the trade truce has been extended to January 10th, 2027 (prev. November 10th, 2026), with China yet to confirm this. Earlier in the week, NYT reported that the US supported extending the trade truce by six months, while China pushed for a longer extension. Negotiators are discussing reciprocal tariff reductions on around USD 30bln of non-sensitive goods from each side, alongside potentially reducing or removing China’s 15% tariff on US LNG. Washington is also seeking Chinese purchases of US agricultural goods and Boeing (BA) aircraft. USTR Greer said China is progressing with its existing 200-aircraft commitment, although Boeing has played down expectations of another order around the summit. IRAN China remains a key economic lifeline for Iran, including through purchases of Iranian crude, while Bessent said Trump and Xi will discuss China's financial ties to Tehran as Washington looks to increase economic pressure on Iran following the launch of "Operation Economic Outcast". Attention will be on any Chinese commitments or indications of further US pressure on entities maintaining ties with Tehran. Attention will also be on whether Trump pushes Xi to use China's influence with Tehran to help facilitate renewed US-Iran talks. RARE EARTHS Reliable supplies and export licensing remain unresolved. Chinese rare-earth magnet shipments to the US fell around a fifth M/M in August, according to customs data reported by the FT. AI Fox Business reported earlier this week that US Treasury Secretary Bessent will present President Trump with a US-China artificial intelligence-related agreement. Fox Business added that Trump would decide whether to approve the proposal before meeting Xi. USTR Greer said advanced AI-chip and semiconductor-manufacturing equipment export controls were not on the agenda for the preparatory AI talks. TAIWAN President Xi is expected to press President Trump on US arms sales to Taiwan. Beijing is also seeking a shift from Washington saying it does not support Taiwanese independence to explicitly opposing it. Any change in US language on Taiwan would therefore be notable. In May, following his meeting with Xi, Trump told Fox News: "I'm not looking to have somebody go independent. And, you know, we're supposed to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war. I'm not looking for that. I want them to cool down. I want China to cool down".
