News detail
OPEN: US stocks open mixed on Friday as breadth turns poor, with most sectors in the red, whilst tech is more balanced (memory and semis bouncing slightly). Western Digital's strong results are helping its peers; however, WDC capex concerns and Toshiba competition worries remain. Industrials is the worst-performing sector, as Bloom Energy (BE -11.1%) and Comfort Systems USA (FIX -10.8%) sink on margin concerns despite beats. In Communications, Verizon (VZ -3.0%), AT&T (T -4.8%) and T-Mobile (TMUS -3.3%) trade lower after SpaceX eyes a fourth US wireless network. In FX, the dollar is firmer against peers, supported by higher US yields, as price action today is so far being driven by the inflationary outlook rather than the AI growth outlook. Yields are up across the curve. The recent S&P Global Flash PMI report for October showed Services falling slightly more than expected and Manufacturing above forecasts, leaving the composite down M/M. Oil prices are up over USD 3/bbl as markets grow more confident that strikes between the US and Iran will resume; it is a question of when, not if. Today, reports emerged of Houthi missile strikes towards Saudi interests, while the FT reported that US President Trump's ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, said the US is prepared for a long stand-off with Iran and acknowledged that the US could still be mired in a stalemate with Iran a year from now. Precious metals are mixed: spot gold is seeing little movement, whilst spot silver continues its decline to new YTD lows. STOCK SPECIFICS: Bloom Energy (BE): Beat & raise, but concerns are over near-term margin pressure from ramping new production capacity and expedited customer timelines, unclear timing on scaling manufacturing toward 5GW, a negative cash flow quarter. Western Digital (WDC): Beat & raise, but capex guided above LT range sparked worries alongside signs that Toshiba is adding capacity which undermines the “rational duopoly” thesis and could mean HDD supply is accelerating. VeriSign (VRSN): EPS miss & lowered FY26 op. income outlook SpaceX (SPCX) in talks w/ infrastructure operators incl. Crown Castle (CCI) to access 80K+ US cell sites as it pursues potential 4th nationwide wireless network; peers Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T) & T-Mobile (TMUS) weighed American Express (AXP): Beat & raise fails to impress; to cut 5% of jobs Deckers Outdoor (DECK): Rev. miss, next Q EPS outlook shy of exp. & cut FY27 rev. view Comfort Systems (FIX): EPS & rev. beat w/ backlog +27% Q/Q, but margins below 1H levels amid DC durability jitters; CFO to retire
